Today's Focus

02.12.25 - I have reached the middle of the week and the first day I get to sleep past 7a. I am quite grateful for that, even though my sister was over here way too early for anyone's liking; as a result I'm going to treat myself by making extra coffee today. Fuck it.
Work - I have a bunch of efiles to do, and then just more NYM stuff; more keeps coming in from Albany so I keep having to fight with the program to change shit according to new guidelines.
Background Noise - Working from home today, so mostly background noise will be the DVR. I will, of course, have some YT videos on mute; speaking of YT, I got through 20 videos across all playlists. I'm steadily getting into the backlog of a particular podcast I'm into.
Study - Wednesday is 'visual study' day and while I got through all the MH370 stuff, I have a bunch of videos on this microbakery scam to watch, plus I'm back to episodes of Red Thread, which covers some fascinating things. And that's just YT! On the DVR I know I have lots of Jeopardy episodes, plus news programs I've been putting off. I'll learn something today alright!
Speaking of studying, I made out like a bandit yesterday. I read three (3) press releases, went back to Shielded from Justice and read a couple (2) sections of that, finished A Brief History of Occupy Wall Street, and got through like 14 random news articled I bookmarked/pulled up.
Extras - It is Wednesday, so I have to clean the catbox out and vacuum the rugs; when hunny gets home we're running out to the drugstore and grabbing dinner (it's takeout night again) then coming home and doing a few episodes of Kiramager before I do my lovely self-care everything shower to relax tonight. Did at least a couple of mini-essays today, and I'm working on a full essay for posting next; I'm glad my motivation to write something is back.

Trump Administration Pushes through Massive Immigration Fee Increase

The next wave of Trump administration policy designed to reduce immigration is here. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will impose major increases in the immigration fee structure effective October 2, 2020. The USCIS immigration fee increase would nearly double the cost of some applications. However, there are some minor reductions for other types of applications.
The Trump administration is simultaneously squeezing immigrants with a new public charge rule and changes to the fee waiver rules that make it more difficult for low-income immigrants and their families. To add insult to injury, some of the new fees will go to pay for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The new immigration fee schedule increases the costs for several family-based petitions and applications and would even add new types of fees. The proposal was initially published in the Federal Register on Thursday, November 14, 2019. That rule has now been finalized and will go into effect on October 2, 2020.
Fee Increase Affect on Adjustment Applicants
At a glance, the fee for Form I-485 will go down by $10, but this can be deceiving. Currently, USCIS waives certain fees for adjustment of status applicants. In most cases, the fee for Form I-765 (employment authorization document) and I-131 (advance parole travel document) are waived with a pending I-485 application. The agency’s immigration fee increase returns to a model of charging separate fees for Forms I-485, I-765, and I-131. Unfortunately, this is drastically increasing the cost for nonimmigrant visitors to adjust status to permanent resident. Instead of paying $1,760 in fees for the typical family-based adjustment case, the combined fees are hiked to $2,860 (if an EAD and advance parole document are needed). This will also affect many U.S. citizens. A large percentage of adjustment cases are for the foreign national spouses of U.S. citizens.
What’s more, USCIS has removed the reduced fee for children filing with parents. In the previous fee schedule, children receive a reduced fee if filing Form I-485 with a parent. USCIS is removing the $390 savings. Child applicants must now pay the same fees as adults.
RECOMMENDED: Green Card through Adjustment of Status
Naturalization Fee Hike
Applicants for U.S. citizenship are some of the hardest hit by the USCIS immigration fee increases. The new fee for Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, is $1,170. That’s 83% more than the current $640 fee. Additionally, fee waivers could be taken away in the future.
The $530 increase will make it increasingly difficult for permanent residents to become citizens through the naturalization process. The move could reverse the efforts made in previous years to make the process more accessible. In the 1990s, the naturalization filing fee was under $100.
DACA Fee Increase Averted
The administration’s initial rule had proposed a new $275 fee for requests to renew DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). However, the final rule did not include this fee. Thus, the fee the renewal DACA will continue to be a combined $495. The combined fee includes a $410 filing fee for Form I-765 plus $85 biometrics services fee.
If your DACA status expires within the next six months, you are already encouraged to renew as soon as possible.
New USCIS Filing Fees for Common Forms
The immigration fee increase affects most forms. In some cases, there is actually a small improvement in the fee. We’ve listed some of the most commonly used USCIS forms:

USCIS Fees Will Not Pay for ICE
USCIS officials have said that the immigration fee increase would help pay for an “overextended system.” Generally, the purpose of fee increases is to fund the operations of USCIS operations. However, the proposed rule gave the agency room to use the fee hike for other activities.
The USCIS immigration fee proposal was written to allocate more than $207 million in filing fees to ICE operations, including ICE immigration benefit fraud investigations and enforcement. This is counter to how USCIS has previously operated. The immigration agency charges fees to pay for the services provided to petitioners and applicants. Fortunately, the final rule declined to use funds collected by USCIS for enforcement operations.
Other Obstacles for Immigrants
Over the last year, the Trump administration introduced other measures to limit legal immigration. All appear designed to make it more difficult for lower income immigrants to qualify for benefits.
In January, USCIS finalized changes to a new public charge rule. The modification requires intending immigrants to submit a new, onerous form that dives into the financial background of green card applicants. Combined with stricter guidelines, it would make it more difficult for low-income applicants to qualify. Multiple court injunctions temporarily halted this policy. However, the administration may be able to implement it in the future.
RECOMMENDED: Public Charge Rule, Explained
Additionally, the agency removed one of the principal methods to qualify for a USCIS fee waiver. Fee waivers enable certain immigrants obtain benefits for a reduced fee or no fee at all. Many applicants have used means-tested benefits as a qualifying factor. USCIS took away this criterion, meaning that applicants may generally qualify only after submitting substantial amounts of tax return information or other documents to prove income level. Consequently, this measure puts a larger burden of work hours on USCIS to screen applicants. The increased costs get passed on to everyone else.
Online Filing
USCIS is offering a small incentive to those who use the efile system for certain forms. Individuals who file online will receive $10 off the filing fee.
USCIS Immigration Fee Increase Goes Into Effect October 2, 2020
Applicants still have time to seek immigration benefits prior to the new immigration fee increase.
The final rule was published July 31, 2020. USCIS is providing a grace period of up to 60 days in which they will accept both the previous and the new versions of certain forms as long as payment of the new, correct fees accompanies the forms. Applicants and petitioners must use the new or revised form by October 2, 2020.

When To Expect My Tax Refund? The IRS Tax Refund Calendar 2019-2020 https://ift.tt/2NeqrAD

One of the most pressing questions in the life of an early tax filer – when can I expect my tax refund to come? Before e-filing, this was always difficult to predict. First, you mail in your return. Then someone inputs all your information (and later, computers scanned in your information), then the Treasury had to issue a check, which was then mailed to you. Now, with a free IRS e-file, you can get your refund in as little as 8 days from when you file, if you elect for direct deposit.
For 9 out of 10 taxpayers, the IRS issued refunds in less than 21 days from the date the return was received last year.
The IRS hasn't announced when it will begin processing tax returns, but based on past years, our guess is they will open eFile processing on January 21, 2020. However, many tax programs do allow you to file early - and some lucky filers even get accepted into test batches with the IRS.

They also remind filers that many tax software programs allow you to submit your taxes before the start of tax season. However, these software programs don't eFile until the IRS opens the system (with a few minor exceptions for testing).
Also, you are legally allowed to mail in your 2019 tax return starting on January 1, 2020. However, if you mail in your return, you can expect to add 6-8 weeks to your processing time (at the low end).

Early Filers - You Will See A Delay In Your Refund
Congress passed a law last year that requires the IRS to HOLD all tax refunds that include the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until February 15, 2020, regardless of how early the tax return was filed. So, if you file on the first day, you might still be waiting until February 15 for your refund.
The IRS released a note last year that people held up by this delay shouldn't expect their refunds until the week of February 24, assuming there are no other problems with the tax returns. You can read this press release here.
The goal of this is to cut down on fraud and give the IRS time to ensure no duplicate returns are filed. The trouble is, the IRS will hold your entire tax refund, not just the EITC or ACTC part.
When you get your refund, don't let it go to waste! Make sure you put it in a high yield savings account ASAP!

IRS Refund Status - How To Track Your Refund
The IRS has multiple ways that you can track your tax refund.
The main ways to track your refund are:

By calling the IRS
Note: the old "Where's my Refund" site is now simply called Check My Refund Status on the IRS webpage. It's essentially the same tool.
First, it starts with your tax software, tax preparer, or your paper refund. Once you submit it, the IRS receives it. To confirm the IRS receives it, you'll see the "accepted" message in your tracking software.
All "your tax return was accepted" means that it passed a basic test of having a valid social security number and other data. It doesn't mean anything except that it's in the IRS queue for processing. Your 21 day average starts from this point in time. If you filed before the IRS started accepting eFile submissions, your 21 day processing time starts from the IRS start date.
At the 21 day mark, you should either see a message that says approved or take action. If you're approved, you should have a date and see your direct deposit in your account within a few days of that date (depending on your bank). If you see a take action message, you may be subject to a tax offset or other issue. Check out these common IRS issues.

CALOOCAN CITY, July 14 (PIA) --The Department of Labor and Employment - National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) has received a total of 30,157 requests for Certificate of Involuntary Separation in a report as of July 1, 2020.
The DOLE certificate is a requirement for application for payment of unemployment insurance or involuntary separation benefit (cash grant) in view of the Social Security System (SSS) Circular No. 2009-011 or the Guidelines on the Payment of Unemployment Insurance or Involuntary Separation Benefit.
It covers employees, including house helpers (Kasambahay) and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who were involuntarily separated from their job due to authorized causes such as, installation of labor-saving devices; redundancy; retrenchment or downsizing; closure or cessation of operation; or disease/illness of the employee whose continued employment is prohibited by law or is prejudicial to his or his co-employee's health.
Of the total number, DOLE-NCR have already approved and released 16,436 certifications—15,536 were requests from workers that were involuntarily separated by locally-based employers while 900 were from OFWs.
As of July 1, 2020, 7:30 AM, there have been over six thousand DOLE certification applications under evaluation and validation of the regional office. For workers whose applications were not approved were told that only those eligible for the DOLE certification should meet the requirements stated in Section 2 (d) of SSS Circular No. 2019-011. DOLE-NCR also reminds concerned workers to provide one (1) valid I.D. and a copy of the Notice of Termination issued by the employer.
In the absence of Notice of Termination, applicants are advised to submit a duly notarized Affidavit of Termination of Employment to DOLE Field or Provincial Office or Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) as provided further in the DOLE Department Circular No. 01-2019 or the Guidelines on the Issuance of DOLE Certification as a Requirement for Application for Payment of Unemployment Insurance or Involuntary Separation Benefit.
